How to: Start Listing Your New Year Resolutions

I don’t know about you, but I’m in a little bit of disbelief that 2018 is merely 8 weeks away. They say time flies when you’re having fun but the fact that the end of the year is practically here has me feeling like I’ve overslept one too many days since January.

Obviously, we still have two major holidays to prepare for. I am the last person to add any major to-do’s to my list during the holiday season, so believe me when I say I am not advocating anything elaborate or ultra time-consuming. However, waiting until the very last week of 2017 to decide what you want to get out of an ENTIRE YEAR doesn’t seem to leave a lot of room for contemplation.  

It’s important to give thought to your goals if you truly want to achieve them. If you’ve seen any of my monthly goals posts, you’d see that’s a lesson I learned this year simply setting goals for the month. When you actually give a good amount of thought to your goals, you leave room for everyday life to happen and essentially make it easier for yourself to achieve the goals you want to.

This post is essentially going to be a “list your new year resolutions with me” as well as a how-to guide since I am really just going to be sharing the way I am planning and prepping my new year resolutions for 2018!


Get Out Your Tools

The picture above includes everything you will need to begin writing your goals (minus the glasses for those who don’t need them)! You’ll need:

  • Journal/Notepad
  • Calendar (for both this year and 2018)
  • Pen/Pencil/Highlighter/Writing Utensil

After you grab everything, we can now begin setting our new year resolutions!

Plan Resolution-Setting Sessions

I’ve had no luck listing even the most simple goals in one sitting… ever. The tool I’ve learned is to give yourself time to actually consider your life and all of the things that could possibly interrupt your plans or cause you to lose focus.

Take about 30 minutes at the end of a few planned days (they could be spread out between the upcoming weeks, every other day of one week, or day after day in one week. Whatever works for you.) to work on your resolutions and the plans to achieve each one.

List Your Resolutions

I can be a bit overly ambitious at times. A way I’ve learned to combat this is by writing everything I want to accomplish on paper. That way, later, when I actually start planning out how I am going to do those things, I can rule out the ones that don’t make sense.

You’ll be referring to your resolutions list with every session to pick out and plan how you want to accomplish your goals! When making the list, don’t be afraid to be a little unrealistic. It might surprise you how much you’ll actually be able to accomplish!

What to Do With Those 30 minutes…

Depending on what you envision doing next year, you may not even need all 30 minutes.  There are some resolutions I’ve set that require more planning than others, like trips that I want to take. Others, like reading x amount of books in a year, don’t require as much time or energy to plan out. You do need to be pretty specific with your resolutions however, to utilize these 2018 planning sessions fully.

Make Sure Calendar/s are as Updated as Possible

The last thing anyone wants to do is plan one thing forgetting something else is already in its place.

Pick Only a Few Goals to Plan each Session

As someone who struggles with being overly ambitious, planning multiple commitments all at once often results in me feeling overworked and exhausted. If you’re as overly ambitious as I am, picking out one or two goals to focus on planing out in each session will suffice!

Consider Possible Changes in Schedule

Focusing on planning out a few simple commitments at a time, leaving room for changes in schedule and what not, is much less restricting than being faced with throwing out an entire resolution mid-year cause it no longer works for you.

Include Reward Systems

Reward systems are so much fun. They give goal setting an entirely new feel and often replenish the motivation you need to work on completing your goals! Depending on the resolution, you can reward yourself when they are halfway completed or even every quarter you complete. It’s completely up to you. You know how to treat yourself more than anyone else does and you know just how often would keep you on your a-game!

  1. You are right time flies and the best way to make the most of it is to have clear objectives for the year ahead. One of my new resolution every year is to try an activity that I’ve never done before or going to a place that I’ve never been!

  2. Love this! This is so true. Resolutions are a big thing for me, and I have to mentally prepare beforehand. I have to write them out and plan them out in a detailed way if I truly want to follow through with them. This post motivates me to get started now, thanks!

  3. Wow what great tips, I admire your organisation. My new years resolutions list are not that long and I like to write them down on New Years Eve when it’s fresh and comes to mind. I look at that last day of the year as a reflection of the just had and I look at what I’ve done and what I haven’t and base my resolutions on them. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. lol.
