4 Simple Ways to Declutter Your Life

Seeing as how we are nearing the end of the first month of the new year, I’ve been thinking a lot about keeping up the positive “new me” momentum. It’s so much easier to maintain that positive mentality during the last few weeks of December and the first few weeks of January but I think once we’re all settled into the new year, that drive and motivation once dedicated to adopting the new ___(fill in the blank)___ declines. In order to counteract this, I try to focus on a new practice every month.

This month is all about decluttering and detoxifying!

Two things we all love reaping the benefits of. No, I’m not talking about decluttering toxic relationships or toxic habits but more so decluttering the simple everyday things that make stockpiling junk so much easier. This way as the year continues, getting rid of the seemingly miniscule junk can allow you room for seemingly miniscule gems like time, space, or just a lighter to-do list.

You have to get rid of the old to make room for the new. Here are 4 simple ways you can use to detoxify your life to make room for that new!

Emptying the Phone

4 Simple Ways to Detoxify Your LifeI have to properly assess just how influential my phone is in my everyday life. It’s not just a communication tool anymore so between using it to talk to family members and friends, there’s also social media, blogging, pictures, my alarm clocks, my devotionals, and games. Call this an extremely millennial thing to say, but I actually have to make an effort to try to use my phone in such a way as to add to my life and not suck the life out of my life.

When we use our phones as much as a lot of us tend to, it is bound to do one or the other. With that being said, it’s important to make sure that our phones stay updated and in-line with the life we want to have/have. For me this meant:

  • deleting numbers I no longer needed,
  • deleting apps I barely use (or use too much)
  • clearing out and organizing the camera roll
  • deleting old conversations I no longer need to refer back to
  • deleting alarms I always snooze
  • getting rid of reminders I’ll never mark as completed ( I had to be honest..)
  • downloading apps that would actually encourage me to get off of my butt

A Major Closet Clean Out

4 Simple Ways to Detoxify Your LifeCleaning out my closet used to be a grueling two-day task for me since I genuinely could not get rid of anything for a million bucks (when I look back at my style decisions, I cannot forgive myself for this). While it can still be tough to let go of certain items, closet clean outs are a huge help. I have one staple rule I stick to when going through my clothes:

If you haven’t worn it in the past year and it isn’t for special events, get rid of it. Get rid of any shirts, pants, hats, scarves, jackets, sweaters, shoes, etc. that you haven’t worn in the past year because odds are this year will not be any different (UNLESS you repurpose all of your clothes… but that’s an entirely different post..)

Organize all of it like your life depends on it because in a sense, it kinda does. At the end of the day, your closet will be ready for both your future shopping trips and your rushed throw-something-on-and-go days.

Cleaning Out the Office Space

4 Simple Ways to Detoxify Your LifeIt doesn’t matter where the office space is or even if it’s an office space at all. This space is generally the place you do the most work. My definition of “office space” is a little broader than most. To me, my office space isn’t simply my work desk or area but my bookshelves, the pile of papers I have yet to organize by my nightstand, and anything remotely near my day-to-day occupancies.

The more clutter you get rid of the less you have to worry about and account for in the future. But you already knew that (;

Going Through/Organizing Emails

4 Simple Ways to Detoxify Your LifeMore tedious than any of the tasks above, this one can take anywhere from zero to all of your time, but it’s so worth it. I will spend a little time everyday for about a week just unsubscribing to threads of emails I thought I would read, but have yet to take more than one glance at.

Doing this allows you to see how to govern your time more wisely and with more consideration. If I sat down to read every email I received everyday, I’d be at my computer for hours on end. It’s ridiculous how many things I’ve subscribed to or wanted to stay notified on that I actually believed i’d read. After organizing and clearing out your emails you can gain a better understanding of the kind of things you actually use your email for which can prevent you from piling on the junk emails later.

  1. This is just what I needed to see on my dashboard today! I started a major clearout in December, and then Christmas came out and it just ground to a halt. Last night I was thinking that I really need to get back on it but it’s difficult with no motivation – this might have just been the boost I needed!


  2. I’m definitely going to be decluttering over the next week or so. I’m moving, so I need to start thinking carefully about what I do/don’t need! It’s hard when it comes to clothes because I have attachment issues with them!
